So good? I had urges to spazz dance, but the place was packed. Hearing the Entire Entertainment LP in order live was great, they were incredible. Hugo’s drumming was the driving force.Ted Leos guitar work was as close to Andy Gill as one can get! Gail Greenwood drove the beat hammering the bass lines and Jon Kings energy and quirky dancing and spot on vocals made it a memorable night. If you go buy some merch that will support Dave Allens family ( original bass player) you can purchase a beaten microve oven signed by the band and used as a percussion instrument during the concert!

A fine concert of Nick's songs, with pretty excellent sound balance - important where there are two brilliant guitarists. This is new to me: because Louis Wigget is an improvising bass guitarist, a whole new level of interplay has been introduced. The band played two loooong improvisations, all three instrument players creating an absolutely majestic structure of music. Completely stunning to me. I was thinking that this is Cream, better than Cream, for our time. Instead of the bass "supporting" the music of the guitarists and drummer, Louis looked for long periods like the core of the music. Amazing to see the three string players as a pure trio, each of equal force. And the richness of their sound was really "incredible", as in "I can't quite believe how wonderful this is!" The second long improvisation was jazz in that it felt as if they were creating it right then, not a rehearsed song with solo sections, but fully new in the moment, with long quieter, ruminative sections, sections of Paul, Louis and Nick trading ideas and lines. I have never experienced something quite like this apart from jazz concerts. At any moment the future was uncertain and I had to try to just take in that this was unfolding, being created among the musicians, perhaps as new to them as it was to me. I really wondered if they had done this before or if, here on the first night of their tour, they were as surprised as I was. Again, I think Louis has brought this to them in a way not possible before, because he has played in different bands in different roles and is fully secure leading as much as supporting. An awesome evening. I must say that the song list covered a range of classic and new, with the humorous Stoned Train Driver being a favorite. For whatever reason, the tone of Louis's bass and amp at the opening of that one (if I'm remembering correctly) was a massive roar, delightful. Maybe the idea of a potential engine disaster was in there. I do hope others will post.

About Crystal Ballroom

The Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theatre is a live event space in the heart of Davis Square in Somerville, Massachusetts.
The original ballroom was built in 1914 when the Hobbs Building was built, complete with the Somerville Theatre, 10 storefronts, a basement bowling alley and café, offices to let, as well as a Masonic Hall on the top floor. The Hobbs’ Crystal Ballroom was on the second floor and for decades, was host to dances, weddings, banquets, and other events.
Eventually, it was used for private functions only, and faded into disrepair before finally closing in the 1980’s. The ballroom was repurposed in 1996 into two cinemas as the Somerville Theatre was renovated and expanded. Seemingly lost to the ages, the Crystal Ballroom was destined to rise again; as entertainment has evolved, so too must the offerings in Davis Square. Thus, during the forced closure of the pandemic, a bold new phoenix was able to sow opportunity from the devastation, rise from the ashes and the Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theatre was fully renovated, improved, and reborn.
