Jorge Pardo Biography
JORGE PARDO Grammy-winning flute/saxophone player Jorge Pardo, is a truly one of a kind artist and one of the most sought after figures in the Spanish scene. He came to prominence through more than 20 years of collaboration with Paco de Lucia and his legendary Sextet, and was the first person to incorporate flute and sax into flamenco, including seminal recordings with the legendary Camaron de la Isla. As such, Jorge has set the template for instruments in flamenco outside of flamecno’s traditional instrument of guitar, creating an entirely new dimension of this ancient tradition. He’s worked extensively with Chick Corea, winning the 2020 Grammy award for Corea’s album “Antidote.” In 2012 he was awarded the “Best European Jazz Musician” award by the Academie Francaise du Jazz, and his 2023 release “Trance Sketches” won the “Best Jazz Album” award at MIN in Spain. Jorge collaborates continuously with all of the top figures in flamenco as well as with artists from many genres, (Astrud Gilberto, Gil Goldstein, Pat Metheny, Tete Montoliu, Ambi Subramanian, Nana Caymmi, etc…)
Born in Madrid, Spain, musician (flute and saxophone) Jorge Pardo’s first professional recording was with Las Grecas, and he later recorded with the Dolores band with Pedro Ruy-Blas. Jorge was introduced to Paco de Lucía, with whom he toured worldwide and recorded many albums. During this time he also met Camarón and recorded La Leyenda del Tiempo, leading to him working on more than 20 albums. Jorge and Chick Corea was regular musical collaborators, most recently performing in both Touchstone and the Spanish Heart Band. Winner of Grammy Awards 2019 whit álbum Antídote.
The bearer of the Premio Nacional de las Músicas Actuales 2015, Award for the Best European Jazz Musician 2013 –given in France by the prestigious Académie du Jazz– and a true master of flamenco, Madrid-born Jorge Pardo brings us his latest show, Trance, to continue delving into the feeling of his privileged relationship with the audience, to continue experimenting with the matter of sound. Between bulerías and boleros, songs and ragas, be-bop and counterpoints, Jorge Pardo has been tracing –he still is– a very singular path through the music of our days. Between twists and turns, whether he mixes with a baroque ensemble or with an orchestra, or by joining African or Caribbean musicians, Pardo is always equal to himself, a musician in a permanent state of curiosity and amazement, open, innovative and inquisitive.
