Frerick den Haan Biography
Frerick den Haan is a pianist and composer whose music sits at the intersection of impressionism, romanticism, and film music. Hailing from The Hague, Frerick creates a world of his own through his narrative compositions — a place to escape the everyday rush, where chaos transforms into calm and clarity.
He draws inspiration from classical masters like Ravel, Debussy, and Chopin, as well as from jazz and contemporary composers and bands such as Alan Silvestri, Chilly Gonzales, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and Death Cab for Cutie. Always in search of the perfect balance between classical, impressionist, film, and indie music, Frerick emphasizes the melancholic character of the piano in his work.
His music has been embraced by millions of listeners and featured on major editorial playlists on Spotify and Apple Music. In 2021, his tracks were included three times in a row on Spotify playlists such as Classical New Releases, Instrumental Study, Atmospheric Piano, and Piano Chill, as well as Apple Music’s top instrumental playlist. Together with illustrator and animator Sarah Pannekoek, he composed the multi-nominated score for the short animated film L’Étranger, which was screened at both national and international film festivals including FilmOneFest (USA), Framed Groningen (NL), and Longless Film Festival (IT).
In late 2023, Dutch music platform 3voor12 (VPRO) named Frerick one of the year’s standout surprises. In 2024, his music was featured multiple times on BBC Radio 3, where it was handpicked by curators such as Downton Abbey actress Michelle Dockery and Irish musician Niall Breslin.
With roots in both jazz and classical music, Frerick den Haan has grown into a versatile musician. In addition to his own compositions, he plays keys for the Dutch indie pop band Handsome Poets (known for hits like Sky On Fire and Dance The War is Over), sells his jazz CDs in Japan, has performed with Hamid El Kasri — one of Morocco’s most prominent gnawa maâlems — and has composed music and soundscapes for NFT games by The Hague-based artist Beer van Geer.
