About this concert
The Fourth Wall / The Dumes / Helens Saturday, August 24, 2024 Alberta Abbey 126 Northeast Alberta StreetPortland, OR, 97211 Doors at 7:00 | Show at 8:00 Free parking is available in the lot across the street until full. All Ages The Fourth Wall are a melodic noise rock band from Portland, OR, originally from Oahu, HI. What is the price we pay for joy, and is it worth it? The thread of this question runs taut through The Fourth Wall’s Return Forever, a fever dream of a record that unearths unresolved complexities of the immigrant experience in nine chapters. Throughout the album, songwriter Stephen Agustin circles a fire that feels so bright and yet so unknowable; there are not many answers to be found, only a disruption, the emergence of a world seen with new eyes. ----- The Dumes are a rock band with members based in Portland and Los Angeles. Their 2020 debut EP “Everything is Horrible” has taken them to the iconic stages of the Troubadour, SXSW, Sundance, and countless venues across the nation. With the experience and guidance of working with GRAMMY-winning producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, Cherry Glazerr, The Killers) under their belts, The Dumes continue to develop and hone their brand of immediate alt rock, swinging from aggressive punk to intimate indie. Their latest EP “The Dumes… in this economy?” dropped August 2023 while the band was out supporting Louise Post of Veruca Salt on a North American tour. ----- Helens is a Shoegaze / Dream Pop quartet based out of Portland, Oregon. After several years and EPs they have released a new album of melancholic anthems to soundtrack an escape to anywhere else but here. The new album, Somewhere In Nowhere, was recorded in 2020 by Corey Coffman (Gleemer) and was released on November 18th, 2022. with help from Portland all-star label, Bud Tapes. Somewhere In Nowhere infuses the band's unique Shoegaze/Post-Rock/Alternative mixture with lusher melodies and more Dream Pop sensibility than previous output. The recent expansion of the lineup to a four piece with added guitar textures has also widened the band's scope which carries the listener from wistful wash to searing sonics.

The Fourth Wall Biography

The Fourth Wall is a melodic noise rock band originally from Hawai’i consisting of members Stephen Agustin, Kasey Shun, Paul Brittain, and Max Lilien. Originally a solo project, Agustin wrote and recorded alone in his home for a year and a half, following the break-up of his previous band, Our Distance (who had been the support act for the Kooks in 2008 and Of Montreal in 2009). These demo recordings were kept relatively secret, being handed out only to a few close friends. With growing encouragement from these friends, Stephen sought to form a band in order to perform these songs live. In the fall of 2010, guitarist Kasey Shun, Bassist Paul Brittain, and drummer Kimo Short joined Stephen to form The Fourth Wall. Their style is primarily lyrically driven and draws from a wide range of musical influences including Neil Young, The Band, My Bloody Valentine, and Sonic Youth. In February of 2011, the band went to Los Angeles, California for six days to record with producer Manny Nieto (The Breeders, HEALTH) and his partner Shane Smith. Their debut album, Motion and Rest was recorded mostly live with minimal overdubs. The album was released in January 2012 and consists of eleven songs concerning the illusory nature of time and the imaginative properties of the reflective consciousness. Sonically, Motion and Rest has a strong melodic presence upheld by a steady rhythm section, a deluge of big electric guitar chords, and an array of atmospheric noises. Vinyl and CD versions of Motion and Rest was released under Hungry Ear Records, the label's first release. Following the release of Motion and Rest, The Fourth Wall became one of the more notable acts in Honolulu's music scene. During their time in Hawaii, The Fourth Wall was the premier support act for visiting artists, Menomena, Andrew Bird, and The Shins. In the summer of 2012 The Fourth Wall (with the exception of Kimo Short) relocated to Portland, OR, where they currently reside. In the fall of that year accomplished drummer, Max Lilien (The Sun-Birds, Southern Belle), joined the band. Over the next year the band wrote and self-produced their latest work, Lovely Violence, which deals with freedom, moral solitude, and the beauty and terror of an unconditional commitment. Lovely Violence was released on July 31st, 2015 on Bug Hunt. http://www.thefourthwallband.com/
