Kansas City’s own new theatre initiative The Playground produces When the Daffodil Blooms: A Musical Myth, an original musical that reimagines the myth of Narcissus and Echo for the modern age. This production challenges its audience to reflect on identity, connection, and self-perception, and its artists to examine how and why theatre is created.
When a botanist and a bartender meet, an unlikely relationship blooms. But fate, love, and self-discovery may weave the strangest of tapestries. A timeless story from Greek mythology comes to life with an experimental score, innovative directing, and a stellar team of actors and musicians. Together they are The Playground, a methodology that examines the way we create theatre, how we can empower the voice of every artist in the room, and tell a story outside of the patriarchal structures we are accustomed to.

Rock and R&B collide with the sultry, silky and vocal grit of Stephonne. They deliver something inimitable, visceral, strange and beautiful.
Stephonne is an up and coming Alternative Rock/R&B artist, showman, actor, writer and a 2023 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Fellow from Kansas City, Missouri. Inspired by the sounds of Prince and Billie Holiday, Stephonne has an unmistakable sultry and soulful voice that sends his listeners on a visceral and experiential journey. In 2015, Stephonne released his first single “I Want To Hold Your Hand”, followed by “Unworthy” and several other singles throughout the years. He/She/They released their first full length album, Caged Bird Sings Songs About Red Beard in 2018 and an EP titled SIS: Side A in 2020. They released its companion EP, SIS: Side B in Summer 2022 and singles, "Deja Vu" and "Rocket in My Pocket". The Music Motion Picture for “Highlander (There Can Only Be 1)” is now streaming worldwide and featured in The 2024 Chico Independent Film Festival! Their bold new single, “1”, and its Austin Snell (They Call Her Death) directed video were released in August of 2024 and mark the first releases from the 2025 sophomore album, STEPHONNE.
