Ant Thomaz Biography
Ant Thomaz is acknowledged for his diverse musical approach that integrates elements of folk, soul pop, and rock influences. As a self-educated artist, he commenced songwriting at the age of twelve, developing a unique sound marked by intricate narrative and cultural richness. His music exemplifies a distinctive synthesis of influences stemming from his Scottish, Irish, and Cajun heritage.
Thomaz has graced distinguished venues such as OVO Hydro, 02 Academy Glasgow & Edinburgh, Elgin Town Hall, SWG, Usher Hall, Queens Hall, as well as the Belladrum and Eden festivals. The band provided support for esteemed artists including Georgia Cecile, The Happy Mondays, James Walsh of Starsailors, Roy Ayers, Kool & The Gang, Big Country, The Wailers, and Sheku Kanneh-Mason.
During the summer of 2023, Thomaz launched his inaugural solo EP, entitled "520," which garnered positive critiques from numerous publications, including The Skinny, The List, The Scotsman, and Scotland on Sunday. His track "Magpies" has appeared on various platforms, including the BBC Afternoon Show, BBC Upload, BBC Art Mix, and BBC6 with Tom Robinson's Mixtape.
On June 15, Ant will launch his latest single, "Believe," which encapsulates his individual journey of resilience and self-discovery, exemplifying the transition from overcoming heartbreak to embracing optimism. The lyrics are inspired by his daughter, intending to express a feeling of solidarity and support amidst adversity. The persistent declaration of "beginning to believe" signifies a transformative journey, during which the narrator gradually relinquishes past trauma and contemplates a more optimistic future. The symbolism of radiant illumination and lively evenings evokes a sense of exhilaration and potential, whereas the theme of reconciling with the past indicates a developed acknowledgment of life's fluctuations.
This release will be succeeded by a tour throughout Scotland, England, and Ireland during the summer and autumn, with an album launch anticipated for the winter.
Reassessments
BBC 6 Tom Robinson: "Exquisite songwriting. Thomaz's amalgamation evokes the styles of Seal, with nuances reminiscent of Lenny Kravitz, Gregory Porter, and Tracy Chapman, resulting in compositions that exemplify his distinctly original talent. "
David Perozzi, Executive Producer at CNN News, states: "Thomaz represents a significant voice of his generation." His ballads exhibit both vulnerability and poignancy, establishing his music as a modern masterpiece.
Anna Welander, host of BBC Upload: "All the elements are converging with Ant Thomaz's latest track 'Believe'; it fosters a sense of hope."
Liz Clark, associated with Celtic Connection & Celtic Radio, states: "Ant's vocal performance and songwriting are captivating."
Len Pennie, host of BBC Scotland Arts Mix, remarks: "The aesthetic appeal of Thomaz's forthcoming single 'Believe' resides in its 'technical word paint'; the interplay between music and lyrics is particularly resonant." I am a profound admirer.
