About this concert
See globally acclaimed pianist Lang Lang side-by-side with the young artists of Interlochen Arts Camp in the inaugural performance of the Shirley Young Distinguished Artist Series. Heralded by The New York Times as “the hottest artist on the classical music planet,” Lang Lang is one of the most influential and committed ambassadors for the arts in the 21st century. The artist, educator, and philanthropist joins Interlochen’s World Youth Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Music Director Designate Cristian Măcelaru for a performance of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” The evening will also feature works by Hollywood film composers, including the legendary John Williams, performed by the Interlochen Philharmonic and World Youth Symphony Orchestra under the batons of Măcelaru and Louis Langrée, Director of the Théâtre National de l’Opéra-Comique in Paris.
A component of Interlochen’s upcoming centennial celebration, the Shirley Young Distinguished Artist Series brings some of the world’s leading artists to Interlochen Arts Camp to work with students and present public performances. Patrons who purchase tickets to Lang Lang’s performance will receive early access to purchase tickets for future events in the series—including all performances by soprano Renée Fleming and trumpeter and composer Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.
