The Last Year Biography
The Last Year is a Baltimore-based alternative rock band, originally formed by frontwoman Niki Barr (vocals) and Scott Ensign (bass and synth). The lineup is completed by BJ Kerwin (drums, Candlebox) and Scott Griffith (guitar). The band’s sound draws from diverse influences, merging the hook-heavy hits of The Cars with the hypnotic, spacey vibes of late 80s and early 90s acts like The Cure and Portishead. This blend of retro influences with modern appeal creates a magical and unique sonic experience. Having toured over 30 countries across three continents, The Last Year are seasoned performers. Their live shows are a spectacle, characterized by Barr’s captivating, airy yet powerful melodies, and dynamic stage presence, complemented by synth growls, driving rhythms, and swirling guitar sounds. The band’s debut EP features the lead single “Sugar,” which bridges the gap between the melancholic allure of The Smiths and the infectious, radio-friendly indie rock hooks of bands like Metric, enhanced by female vocals reminiscent of Garbage. “Sugar” received airplay on more than 14 radio stations, including SiriusXM’s Alt Nation, DC 101, WTMD, WLUM, KWSS, and WWWX. Soon after the release of their second single, "Mania," The Last Year was named one of SXSW's "Austin 100." Emerging from a hiatus since 2018, The Last Year returns with a renewed energy and a powerful new single. The band is set to release a series of upcoming singles that will resonate deeply with fans of alt rock.
