Daniel O'Sullivan Biography

“The music of Daniel O’Sullivan plays like a haunted jukebox.” — The Wire

“A multi-dimensional artist that successfully soundtracks our profoundly confusing 21st century.” — Mojo

“O’Sullivan’s dreampop mantras casually open up portals into other dimensions.” — Uncut

Daniel O’Sullivan is a composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in London, whose work has been a defining force in the experimental music landscape since the late 1990s. His contributions to the field are as diverse as they are profound, with a chameleonic ability to blend genres and a penchant for sonic exploration, O’Sullivan has garnered international acclaim through his work with a myriad of groundbreaking groups, including Ulver, Sunn O))), Grumbling Fur, Æthenor, and This Is Not This Heat. His creative endeavors extend beyond the conventional, as he has composed soundtracks for film, installation works, and contributed to the legendary KPM, Sonoton, and Standard music libraries.

O’Sullivan’s music is a meticulously crafted soundscape where ancient and modern worlds collide. His compositions explore the intersections of high renaissance music, modern sacred music, village green minimalism, and hauntological English wyrd, creating a hybrid form that is uniquely his own. Over two decades, O’Sullivan has diligently scouted musical treasures, fusing them into new, transcendent forms. This approach results in music that is at once intimate and alien, archetypal and atypical, joyous and melancholic. His work shifts fluidly from self-possessed, elegantly latticed arrangements to sculpted electronics, with a deep emphasis on texture, counterpoint, and the mysterious energies of antiquity and modern-day psychedelic research.

In his relentless pursuit of the unknown, O’Sullivan has worked alongside a diverse array of visionary artists, from live performances with the ‘continuous music’ pioneer Charlemagne Palestine to creating immersive, large-scale surround sound installations with Turner Prize-nominee Mark Titchner. His prolific discography is a testament to his versatility and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of music. Whether shrouded in the ritualistic drone of Sunn O))), weaving ethereal soundscapes with Ulver, or at the helm of This Heat’s celebrated revival, O’Sullivan’s contributions have consistently challenged and expanded the limits of experimental music, leaving an indelible mark on the sonic tapestry of our age.
