Halvcirkel Biography
Halvcirkel is a Danish string trio founded in Copenhagen in 2015, consisting of violist Mika Persdotter, violinist Bettina Marie Ezaki and cellist Nicole Hogstrand.
In 2024, Halvcirkel signed with FatCat Records’ modern classical imprint 130701 to release their first album of entirely original compositions, titled 'Vida.' The album showcases the group’s creative evolution, incorporating techniques like col legno and pizzicato to craft sonic portraits of Nordic landscapes, evoking the wild beauty of Iceland, Sweden and Denmark. The compositions on 'Vida' echo the influence of key figures in modern classical and post-classical music such as Brian Eno, Craig Leon, Carl Nielsen, Arvo Pärt and Terry Riley.
Their philosophy is that a band is never separate from its surroundings but always part of something larger. Their sound is marked by the intricate interplay of their instruments, which blend seamlessly to create a dynamic musical dialogue driven by contrast, tension and resolution.
Halvcirkel’s body of work is as diverse as their artistic philosophy. They have reimagined works by composers such as Dmitri Shostakovich and Philip Glass, collaborated with artists across musical disciplines including Henrik Lindstrand, Signe Lykke, Hania Rani and undertaken special commissions like their collaboration with Denmark’s National Gallery in 2023. Their work with composer Anders Lauge Meldgaard on a reimagination of the Ancient Greek poet Sappho’s Fragment 94 reflects their interest in working across the whole spectrum of the arts.
With an expansive creative vision and a commitment to musical dialogue, Halvcirkel continues to push the boundaries of the string trio format. Their work reflects a contemporary take on classical music, balancing tradition with experimentation and inviting listeners into a world of rich textures and artistic exploration.
"Halvcirkel envelops us with its floating strings, a canvas balanced on the dome of a fragile world hidden from human sight. With Vida, energies form friendships with twirling melodies, tightrope-walking notes emerging from refined intelligence. Magical.” - Silence and Sound, 2024
"Vida is not just an album but a masterful exploration of sound and emotion, where each track invites listeners into the intimate, ever-evolving world of Halvcirkel, leaving an indelible mark on the post-classical music landscape.” - Classical Post, 2024
“A vibrating debut”, “Seriously convincing” - Politiken, 2024
”My encounter with their music was a major eye-opener regarding the vitality and diversity of new compositional music in Denmark…Listening to Halvcirkel is like hearing a conversation unfold between instruments, allowing room for spontaneity and improvisation despite fixed compositions.” - Passive/Aggressive, 2024
"Halvcirkel's musical exploration of these landscapes goes beyond mere homage; it's a journey through sound that embraces minimalist aesthetics while establishing their unique voice in the genre.” - Musicngear, 2024
”This performance is so stunning in it’s austerity, because they’re letting the resonance of the tones breathe - letting the tones be without doing a ton of shit. ... You can hear how they’re listening in a very special way. There’s a give and take which feels like they’re improvising together. They are not executing a score, they’re giving the music” - The Wire Magazine, 2021
“...A new generation of classical artists question the cult of perfection that holds sway in the neck of the woods. Analogue records - softer, warmer, more human and more vulnerable are all part of the project. The Danish collective Halvcirkel is a physical manifestation of that concept.” - The Gramophone, 2018
