Hailing from the sun-soaked west coast, California dreamer Derek James is a fresh face in Nashville’s country scene - bringing a unique perspective to the genre with his “Coastal Country” sound. After attending Cal Poly and earning a degree in packaging engineering, a field far from the music scene, he realized his passion in music was too strong to overlook. He made the bold move to Music City in late 2021, ready to make waves in the country music scene.

Derek’s debut EP, “California Rays,” launched in 2022, is a vibrant introduction to his coastal country genre - a blend of easy going charm and country music storytelling. With signature smooth vocals, Derek’s tunes have quickly become a soundtrack for anyone longing for a taste of the coast. His music has caught the ear of country fans and industry tastemakers alike, with features on Spotify’s “All New Country,” “Fresh Finds Country” and CMT’s “The Roundup.” To date, he has amassed over 330K streams, proving his sound is resonating far beyond the water. Collaborating with rising producer Zachary Manno (Lady A, BRELAND) Derek has crafted a sound that feels both innovative and nostalgic, merging the storytelling and authenticity of country with the laid back feel of the beach.

But Derek’s talents extend beyond performing. He’s also a skilled songwriter with recent cuts by Nashville up-and-comers. His songwriting prowess was recognized with semi-finalist honors in the 2022 Great American Song Contest and finalist status in the 2023 American Songwriter Song Contest.
