Jane Irving Biography
A risk taker with “lavish talent and striking originality”, Jane is a gifted musician who possesses an emotive, narrative style that make her a unique storyteller in the jazz genre.
Australian jazz vocalist and pianist Jane Irving, a New Yorker since 2011, has become a valued presence on the New York jazz scene. Guitar great Russell Malone has called her “The personification of taste.” She has worked with Ron Affif, Tadataka Unno, Ed Cherry, Sullivan Fortner, Saul Rubin, Steve Williams, Paul Bollenback and many more. She performs in and around NYC including some top venues such as Birdland and Mezzrow and holds extensive residences at various jazz bars around the city. A classical piano student from age six (placing third in her state’s final high school performance exam), she regularly incorporates the instrument into her live gigs. But following a long-ago epiphany at her first gig as a solo vocalist, she’s made singing her primary means of expression.
Her 2023 release, Don’t Quit Now, features pianist Josh Richman, bassist Kevin Hailey (her husband) and drummer Kayvon Gordon on a collection of songs by the likes of Ivan Lins, Al Cohn/Dave Frishberg, Dizzy Gillespie and Jay Leonhart.
“Ms Irving is one badass jazz stylist, the kind that makes audiences say WOW!” - Stephen Mosher, Broadway World.
"Intimate, highly personal singing and storytelling. Ultimately a moving statement that first-class music, like love itself, is never predictable" - on "Don't Quit Now", Will Friedwald.
"The personification of taste" - Russell Malone.
"A dazzlingly beautiful voice, filled with sincerity and flawless interpretation" -Thierry Docmac, Paris Move.
"Jane Irving's ability to navigate the many sides of the jazz vocal genre is confirmed by this album of eleven engagingly diverse songs" -Barry O'Sullivan. Fine Music Magazine, Australia.
"Jane Irving has a sublime cool cultivated in the environment of bootleggers, strippers and jazzmen with street smarts" John Apice, American Highways. -
