Dat het Franse chanson als geen ander genre gestalte weet te geven aan gevoelens van verdriet, geluk en nostalgie, realiseerde ook Tess Merlot zich toen zij voor het eerst haar eigen liedjes schreef. Voor haar tweede album Chante la vie zocht ze naar woorden en melodieën om nieuwe veranderingen in haar leven uit te drukken. Het verdwijnen van het ouderlijk huis en de connectie met de kindertijd, het verlies van een naaste en de vergankelijkheid van vriendschappen. Maar ook de positieve kanten van persoonlijke groei, de evolutie van een langdurige liefde en de realisatie dat we, eenmaal volwassen, sprongen in het diepe blijven maken.
Sinds haar debuutalbum Laissez-moi in 2021, is Tess Merlot dé chansonnière van de Lage Landen. Ze tourde met haar band door het hele land en speelde in november 2023 nog met het Residentie Orkest in een uitverkocht PAARD in Den Haag. Daarnaast maakt ze podcasts en radioprogramma’s over Franstalige muziek en wordt ze regelmatig op nationale tv en radio gevraagd om haar liefde voor het chanson te delen. Het jaar 2023 bracht haar over de grens, waardoor ze zowel in Frankrijk, Duitsland en België een nieuw publiek vond als de fameuze Ellington Jazz Club in Perth, Australië uitverkocht.
Op Chante la vie staan meerdere singles die in de afgelopen twee jaar verschenen zijn. Zo ontving Ma maison / Ons huis veelvuldig airplay op NPO Radio 2 en 5, en was het de jongste single ooit die op nummer 1 eindigde in Eeuwige Roem-lijst van Radio West. Rien à perdre werd in 2023 dé Radio Tour de France-hit op NPO Radio 1 en stond wekenlang in de playlist van NPO Radio 5. Met het duet Je n’ai plus 20 ans was Tess samen met Ben Cramer in januari 2024 te gast in onder andere Tijd voor Max en Shownieuws. Op 25 mei 2025 staat ze met haar voltallige band en een strijkkwartet in de Koninklijke Schouwburg in Den Haag.

Tess Merlot Biography
Lightning struck, the first time Tess Merlot heard Jacques Brel. From that moment on, music was all around. After playing hundreds of shows, the essence remained: allowing the human soul to reach the surface the way only French torch songs can. With original songs from Brel, Piaf en Aznavour and her own catalogue.
Motivated to share her passion and unite cultures, Tess released her first EP Chansons pour non-francophones in 2017. In 2019 she enchanted a jam-packed Paradiso with her song ‘Mon Paris’. In 2020 she toured the country with her Moutons, selling out venues such as PAARD in The Hague and TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. Leading up to the release of her debut album ‘Laissez-moi’ in July 2021, Tess’s songs received extensive airplay on multiple popular Dutch radio stations, such as NPO Radio 1, 2, 5 and the Belgian VRT 2. In 2022 she continued her tour through the Netherlands with internationally renowned trumpet player Michael Varekamp and The Legends, bringing their show ‘Swingin’ Paris’ to a broad audience. In the first quarter of 2023 the shared the stage again with their new show ‘Helden van Toen’, right before Tess went back to WA, Australia for a two month tour. This summer she made her debut in front of an exclusively French audience while touring in the South of France. At the end of november 2023, she played a sold out show in the main hall of music venue PAARD, together with the renowned Residentie Orkest.
Whether she takes the stage with an entire orchestra or with her band, an irresistible joie de vivre is a given while chansons in their purest form are sprinkled across the room. Sometimes it’s stripped down and pure, other times grotesque and bold. Whatever it takes to do them justice. And every time Tess allows the chansons to do their work, magic appears.
