About this concert
A rare chance to hear vocalist and violinist Alice Zawadzki, pianist Fred Thomas and bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado perform music that weaves its way through jazz, chamber music, folk and improvisation. Signed to iconic label ECM, the trio released their highly acclaimed album Za Górami (Behind the Mountains) to rave reviews last year. Jazzwise called it "a delicately free-flowing, spacious, still-of-the-night affair with a sensitive less-is-more approach to ensemble dialogue." The Guardian gave a four star review for its "beautiful music and absorbing stories" and Jazzviews described it as “an extraordinary debut album from a trio of extraordinary musicians … utterly spellbinding.” This will be Alice's second visit to The Drewe - last September she performed a set of re-imagined Kate Bush songs as part of the Whiddon Autumn Festival. Location The Long Room - Drewe Arms - Drewsteignton, EX6 6QN

Alice Zawadzki Biography

Loosely connected to the jazz world but realistically inhabiting her own realm, the critically-acclaimed vocalist, violinist, pianist and composer presents music from her latest release, Within You Is A World Of Spring. Diffracting through a greenwood canopy, Zawadzki’s poetic words and music illuminate her unique artistry and the concept behind her latest work. She leads an inspiring band of celebrated musicians in realising her extraordinary, often moving, occasionally droll, original songs: Fred Thomas (piano, drums, percussion, banjo, organ), Rob Luft (guitar), and Misha Mullov-Abbado (double bass).

“She is a genuine original” **** The Guardian

“a voice of velvet suppleness and gutsy emotional power” – The Arts Desk

"Tender in spirit and defiantly anti-genre... A cornucopia of delights."
★★★★ Jazzwise Magazine

"An awestruck hymn to nature that masters all manner of styles."
★★★★ (contemporary album of the month) The Guardian

“a major statement from an increasingly significant artist.” – Music OMH
