Tom Penny Biography
UK rapper Tom Penny is here to make a powerful impact with his lyrical complexity and distinctive sound. Based in Redhill, Surrey, Tom has rigorously honed his craft in order to achieve the level of skill and honesty heard in his music today.
Tom’s love for music began at a young age, growing and blossoming well into adulthood. After dabbling in the piano and saxophone, it was Kendrick Lamar’s “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City” that initially led Tom down the hip-hop rabbit hole, beginning to develop his raps and freestyles at just 16 years old. Now, he is a well-established artist within the UK hip-hop scene, akin to artists like Loyle Carner, Frankie Stew, and Harvey Gunn.
Tom found that music was the perfect outlet to express himself, something which he remains massively appreciative of. Not only has he been able to take ownership of his mental health struggles and anxiety disorder via music, but it has been incredibly therapeutic in transforming some of his darker moments into work he is proud of.
Consequently, Tom’s music is heavily introspective as it centres on becoming the best version of yourself. This is something he has navigated first-hand, especially on his latest project, as he tackles his journey with addiction to properly appreciate the real love in his life: family, music, and his relationship. In turn, he hopes his music will spark people’s ambitions to be the best version of themselves, empowering listeners to put their efforts into that which serves them.
‘Both Sides Of The Coin’ speaks about finding value in who you are, and learning how to be on your own. Tom wrote the album at home, surrounded by his family and friends which he cites as essential in finding that peace. This personal, heartfelt nature of the album naturally lends itself to moments of independent listening, although there are livelier moments which are best suited to listening with others too.
This sincerity transpires across his writing process; after writing and mixing beats himself, he recruits those he trusts most to help polish his projects. Most notably, he has worked with Michael PR at 48Four Studios, with whom he has built a solid professional relationship over the years, and studio owner Joel David Mandela Smith. Similarly, Tom closely collaborates with his personal friend and videographer Sebastian Griffin-Keane to film, direct, and edit music videos. So far, Tom has shot videos in the UK, Thailand, Vietnam, and Australia.
Due to his ambition to tell stories, Tom primarily writes his music in the vein of complete albums, with certain lyrics, ideas, and songs taking the form of ‘chapters’. When combined with themes of self-reflection, Tom’s music is all-encompassing and “engrossing" (Clout Magazine). He has an eclectic and wide-spanning repertoire of influences, including the production of Kanye West, Madlib, and The Alchemist, as well as the lyricism of J. Cole, JayZ, Nas, André 3000, JID, and Biggie.
With almost 10k monthly Spotify listeners, the release of ‘Both Sids Of the Coin’ in July 2024, and editorial accolades ("authentic and compelling" - Notion), there is no stopping Tom Penny as he
continues to enrich the UK rap scene. He has plans to perform more, including under the new collective he originated, ‘Stone Hill Collective’, a community which he hopes will help growing artists organise live shows and progress their careers.
