Samael Biography
S A M A E L awoke in an Atomic bunker in the Swiss Alps on the 14th of July 1988…
...as brothers Vorphalack, wielding guitar and vocals, and Xytraguptor, master of drums, delved into daily rehearsals underground, birthing their self-financed EP, "Medieval Prophecy."
Securing a deal with Osmose Production, they released "Worship Him" in April 1991, followed by "Blood Ritual," their debut under Century Media. In 1992.
"Ceremony Of Opposites" in February 1994 marked a shift, with Xy focusing on music and Vorph on lyrics. They toured extensively, culminating in "Rebellion" (1995) and the cornerstone album "Passage" (1996), which marks a turn in the musical path of the band, Xy switching to drum machine and adding much more keyboards resulting in a colder and more symphonic sound that will become the trademark of the band from now on.
"Eternal" emerged from Montreux's Mountain Studios, leading to global tours and their first DVD, "Black Trip."
"Reign Of Light" (2004) and "Solar Soul" (2007) garnered acclaim before "Above" (2009) challenged norms with a more raw and “old school” sound.
The EP "Antigod" prefaced "Lux Mundi" (2011), bridging over two decades of S A M A E L's evolution.
2014 saw Xy's symphonic composition entitled "Sedunum" that he wrote for the city of Sion, while welcoming Drop as bassist in the band. They toured the 20th anniversary of "Ceremony Of Opposites" and then returned to the studio for "Hegemony," released in 2017 under Napalm Records.
Mak's departure saw Drop switch to guitar and Ales join as bassist, cementing a new chapter in S A M A E L's legacy.
While touring for “Passage” 25th anniversary, they recorded the full set during a sold out show in Krakow, Poland, in October 2022 and released it as a live album on Napalm Records in February 2024.
The band is now working on its new album, the follow-up to 2017’s “Hegemony”.
