About this concert
In 2014/15, string quartet ETHEL became Denison University’s first Ensemble-in-Residence. Embedded on campus and the surrounding community, ETHEL works across disciplines, using music as an entry point for engagement and life-long learning. Residency activities employ the principles of music practice and collaboration to enhance learning in the liberal arts. Based on deep relationships with faculty, students, administration, and community partners, the project increases access to, and understanding of music, improving its integration into communities. The residency sparks discussion and challenges segregated disciplinary pedagogy on and off-campus. In conjunction with Denison partners, the project’s successes have created programming that employs the components of musical activity to inform, cohere, and inspire learning, creativity, and cooperation. The program taps creative energy by contrasting knowledge and experience within a specific discipline with the knowledge and process of real-time creation in music. Mindful listening, collaboration, improvisation, and non-verbal expression are fundamental to fruitful interaction in myriad disciplines. Identifying and discussing these aspects of knowledge benefits students of all subjects as well as life-long learners. Students and faculty in seemingly disparate liberal arts fields are drawn out of their comfort zones of “silo-ed” expertise and encouraged to explore alternate ways of approaching academic material. A deeper understanding of musical practice and of music itself promotes cross- and multi- disciplinary collaborations, and opens doors to mutual understanding and team playing.

What fans are saying

The show was magical! All members of the string quartet ETHEL are top musicians and Ron Carter is one of the best bass players. I highly recommend seeing ETHEL when they perform at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Balcony Bar, some Friday and Saturday evenings. And check out their music on their website ethelcentral.com

Ethel Biography

Described as “indefatigable and eclectic” (The New York Times) and “vital and brilliant” (The New Yorker), the string quartet ETHEL invigorates the contemporary music scene with exuberance, intensity, imaginative programming, and exceptional artistry.

At the heart of ETHEL is a collaborative ethos – a quest for a common creative expression that is forged in the celebration of community. As cultural and musical “pollinators,” the quartet brings its collaborative discoveries to audiences through multi-dimensional musical repertoire and community engagement.

ETHEL performs adventurous music by celebrated contemporary composers such as Philip Glass, Julia Wolfe, Phil Kline, Andy Akiho, David Lang, John King, Raz Mesinai, John Zorn, Steve Reich, Anna Clyne, Kenji Bunch, JacobTV, Don Byron, Marcelo Zarvos, Evan Ziporyn, Judd Greenstein, Terry Riley, Mary Ellen Childs and Son Lux.

ETHEL’s 2013-'14 season commences with a performance at the Santa Fe Opera filmed for the PBS special Music and Myth followed by the world premiere of the multi-media project Documerica as part of the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s 2013 Next Wave Festival. Other season highlights include nationwide tours with guitar virtuoso Kaki King and Native American flutist Robert Mirabal. ETHEL currently serves as: Ensemble-in-Residence at the Grand Canyon Music Festival's Native American Composers Apprenticeship Project; House Band of TEDxManhattan; and Resident Ensemble at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Balcony Bar.

Founded in 1998 and based in New York City, ETHEL is comprised of Ralph Farris (viola), Dorothy Lawson (cello), Kip Jones (violin) and Corin Lee (violin).
