Join us for a special night at the intimate Lille Aeske Arthouse.
Mimi Gilbert is an independent artist who has spent the better part of the last 10 years living, touring and creating music in Australia and New Zealand. Previously based in Melbourne now back in Los Angeles, the Californian born has toured most recently with Julia Jacklin and Angie McMahon and shares a similarly deeply-crafted, folk-inflected approach to their songwriting.
Mimi looks forward to hitting the road with their band this October along the beloved west coast, playing songs from their debut record “Grew Inside the Water’ and many from their upcoming record ‘Undrowning.’
Mimi says that music is what saved them. It was her life raft back to feeling and a teacher for learning how to take up space and play with life’s tension rather than hide from it.
Sometimes the songs mimi write are so quiet you have to push your ear towards them, sometimes they are a raging river of loud emotion and sometimes, just a little tune to make us laugh.
Having got their start playing music at age 15 busking on the streets and train stations of the USA west coast, mimi finds themself feeling most alive when singing for real breathing humans. Whether recording music in a studio or playing live, mimi’s hope is to simply follow the feeling. And just maybe, to see others on the same winding trail, finding our way ‘into the peace of the wild things’ (Wendell Berry).
Mimi’s recent accomplishments include spending time with grandma, showing her 3 year old nephew how to not be afraid of bugs, making the morning coffee her beloved wife, and dedicating themself to this sacred old craft of songwriting, storytelling and traveling around to share it.
This will be Mimi’s first headline US tour post the start of the pandemic.
On the likes of ‘underrated’ (Double J) 2020 album Grew Inside The Water, Mimi established themself as a talented singer and guitarist capable of ruminative insight and quietly devastating song-craft, inviting comparisons to Laura Marling and Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker. The album left deep ripples among many, picking up accolades such as Double J and FBi Radio Feature album and noted by NME as one of their ‘Top 10 album picks’ in 2020.
2024 brings a new album from Mimi, titled undrowning out via COHORT November 2024.
