About this concert
Een liedjesboek over het Caribisch gebied tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog uit de erfenis van haar vader prikkelde de nieuwsgierigheid van zangeres Izaline Calister. Ze kende veel liedjes, maar wist weinig over hun achtergrond. Wat gebeurde er tijdens WOII in De West? Ze leerde over aanvallen van Duitse duikboten, de cruciale rol van olieraffinaderijen en Amerikaanse legers. Ondanks angst en onzekerheid met bandeloosheid als gevolg bleven de mensen zingen en dansen op tropische ritmes als calypso, tumba en reggae. Daarnaast brachten Amerikaanse soldaten hun films en nummers mee. De Caribische bevolking genoot daarvan, maar had tegelijkertijd kritiek op de Amerikaanse aanwezigheid, getuige het protestlied Rum and Coca Cola.
