Bill Charlap Biography
Grammy award winner Bill Charlap was born in New York City into a musical family. His father, Moose Charlap, was a Broadway composer and songwriter whose credits include the Broadway score of Peter Pan. His mother, Sandy Stewart, is a singer who performed with Benny Goodman, co-starred on TV's Perry Como Show and scored a Grammy nomination for her hit single "My Coloring Book" Mr. Charlap began playing the piano at a very young age and was fully thrust into the jazz world in the late '80s when he joined baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan's quintet. In 1994, he joined the Phil Woods Quintet. Charlap began his solo recording career in 1994 and his latest 2024 release is "And Then Again" (Blue Note). Mr. Charlap’s album with Tony Bennett, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern (RPM/ Columbia), won the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. It features Mr. Charlap and Mr. Bennett in duet, in collaboration with the Bill Charlap Trio and in duo piano performances with his wife, renowned jazz pianist and composer, Renee Rosnes.
