Hayes Carll

Hayes Carll is a singer and songwriter whose rootsy sound blends rock & roll swagger, country storytelling, and folk introspection. Known for clever lyrics and everyman appeal, Carll is a prominent figure in Americana music, balancing humor and heartfelt emotion. Born on January 9, 1976, in Houston, Texas, Carll began writing songs at 15, influenced by Bob Dylan, John Prine, and Kris Kristofferson. After earning a history degree, he built a loyal following playing in Texas bars. Carll released his debut album, Flowers and Liquor, in 2002, earning comparisons to Townes Van Zandt. His self-released 2005 album, Little Rock, topped the Americana charts. Signing with Lost Highway Records, he released Trouble in Mindin 2008, featuring the satirical “She Left Me for Jesus,” and contributed songs to the 2010 film Country Strong. His 2011 album, KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories), won the Americana Music Association’s Album of the Year. Following a personal and professional reassessment, Carll’s introspective 2016 album, Lovers and Leavers, was produced by Joe Henry. In 2019, Carll released What It Is, produced by Allison Moorer and Brad Jones, and married Moorer the same year. During the 2020 quarantine, he revisited his songbook with Alone Together Sessions. His 2021 album, You Get It All, co-produced by Moorer, embraced a stronger country influence and included the Alzheimer’s awareness track “Help Me Remember.” Carll’s work, blending wit, heart, and rootsy charm, continues to resonate with audiences, affirming his place in Americana music.
