Human Barbie Biography
Human Barbie is an analog fantasy; a whispering alchemy of golden sunsets and midnight vinyl. Formed in 2018 by songwriter Christopher Leopold, Human Barbie spins threads of wistful pop, shoegaze, and psychedelia to create a melancholy dreamscape, colorful and intoxicating.
Human Barbie’s debut album ‘Get a Life’ (Poor Man Records, 2020) is an exploration of personal heartbreak, seen through the lens of psychedelic pop. Fueled by the disintegration of a treasured scene of musical friends and collaborators in LA, Leopold took the lessons he learned from veteran producer Gus Seyffert (Beck, The Black Keys, Bedouine), and turned his focus inward. Recording in his apartment on a vintage 16-track tape machine, he spent months translating the experience into a deeply personal musical statement. ‘Get a Life’ was captured and mixed with 100% analog effects, reverb, and performance techniques; the entire process was painstaking and deliberate, and the resulting album is a lyrical artifact of creative introspection.
‘Get a Life’ was very well received by fans and critics; it was featured in Brooklyn Vegan, BIRP!, Indie Shuffle, KCRW, and Buzzbands.la; it also landed on Compact Cassette and in Spotify editorial playlists, garnering over 100k+ streams on Spotify and YouTube. It was one of the top selling albums in Bandcamp’s ‘New and Notable’, trending in multiple genres. And several songs have been used in commercial syncs, including a Facebook radio ad; the single ‘Don’t Run Away’ was featured on DISCO’s 2022 SXSW mixtape.
Inspired by the success of ‘Get a Life’, Leopold spent the following year isolated in a Baltimore warehouse, exploring new sounds and absorbing the gritty darkness of a world in turmoil. The resulting EP, ‘no worries’, channels the bittersweet nostalgia of 90’s-era shoegaze with the heartfelt simplicity of Human Barbie’s signature sound. ’no worries’ is patient and expansive, and paints a shimmering portrait of a restless heart, yearning for something more…
“Hazy laconic psych… songs that float along like a half-remembered dream.” - Brooklyn Vegan
