billy marrows Biography
"An exhilaratingly original sound, at once intimate and expansive"
★★★★ Editor's Choice in JAZZWISE Magazine
Billy Marrows is an inventive award-winning jazz guitarist and composer based in London. His taste for singable melodies, emotive harmonies and infectious rhythms has led his music to be described as ‘accessible and intriguing’ and ‘hardcore modern jazz, but with actual melodies’.
Billy is an active sideman and arranger, working with artists such as Hohnen Ford, Tom Barford, Patchwork Jazz Orchestra, OK Aurora and Huw V Williams. His composition Genmaicha was featured on Patchwork Jazz Orchestra’s latest release and he studied with Vince Mendoza on the 2018 Metropole Orkest Arrangers Workshop.
With all proceeds going to World Child Cancer, Billy’s debut album 'Penelope' came out on the 26th January 2024 to critical acclaim. It was created as a surprise for his mum Penny who sadly died from cancer in August 2023. The album features Billy’s new chamber jazz group, Grande Família, both as a 12 piece ensemble and in smaller combinations, interspersed with solo guitar vignettes. It includes Penny’s nephews Jonas on bass, great-niece Dijan on flute and Billy’s girlfriend Teresa on viola, alongside eight diverse musicians special to him including Mike Soper, Tom Ridout and Chris Williams of Led Bib. The lead single 'A Grande Família' is a joyful Hermeto Pascoal inspired samba and an homage to Billy’s large extended family; it also gives the ensemble its name.
