Janet LaBelle Biography
LaBelle's songwriting has been described as "top-notch," according to Aquarian Weekly and "full of neat, unexpected flourishes" by New York Music Daily. With a range of influences from 60s French pop to alternative country from indie-rock to jazz, her songwriting reflects a love for a timeless and classic sound.
Starting out as a drummer, vocalist, and keyboardist on the New Jersey indie-rock scene, by the age of 17, LaBelle was a nationally touring artist. As a solo artist, she went on to release the albums Moon Songs (2010) and Blossom & Blue (2011). Her single: Just a Little Rain (2012), was nominated by the NJ JAM Awards in 2013 for "Top Indie Single.” While pursuing her solo work, LaBelle also toured and performed with Jimmy Destri (of Blondie) as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for his band Jimmy Destri & The Sound Grenade. Her other collaborations include performing as a vocalist with jazz producer and bandleader JC Hopkins (Norah Jones, Willy Nelson).
In the fall of 2013, LaBelle went back to her roots as a drummer, joining the line-up of the Brooklyn-based psych-rock band Sharkmuffin. The band performed seven showcases at CMJ festival and was voted one of NYC's "Top 10 Rising Female-Fronted Bands" by the Village Voice and proclaimed one of "100 Bands You Need to Know in 2014" earlier this year by Alternative Press.
LaBelle currently lives in Brooklyn where she continues to write and perform her own music. She is working on her third studio album.
