Lucy Woodward is a powerhouse singer whose soulful, impeccably controlled vocals will turn on a dime, from a runaway-train full-throttle intensity to a soft, slow-burning sultry whisper, only to take you back into an inferno.
Lucy has released several albums on major and indie labels, always genre-bending and fusing styles along the way, yet has consistently remained true to her voice, story and songwriting. Her latest release Lucy Woodward & The Rocketeers -- featuring her adventurous and explosive jazz orchestra -- is a live album, as released in 2024 on GroundUP Music. All About Jazz says: “Not to be missed. Album of the week” and “the combination of grit and finesse one finds in Woodward’s music is quite rare.”
Born in London and raised in New York by her musicologist/music teacher/bellydancer mum, Lucy spent summers in The Netherlands with her conductor/composer dad. Her early influences helped her learn about the power of melody, which fresh out of school led her to sing in coffee shops for tips in NYC’s West Village and doing session work before putting her first band together and signing her first record deal to Atlantic, landing her on Top 40 radio, earning her two BMI Songwriter awards.
Collaborations of note include Charlie Hunter, Snarky Puppy, Pink Martini (filling in and learning to sing in Croatian, Turkish, Spanish, French and Japanese on a few days' notice), WDR Big Band, Danish Radio Big Band and Frankfurt Radio Big Band with conductor/arranger Jim McNeely. Recording/tour credits also include icons such as Rod Stewart, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Chaka Khan, Carole King and Joe Cocker. Lucy has appeared on many movie soundtracks, including What a Girl Wants, The Blind Side and Ice Princess, where she is featured singing the Bjork/Betty Hutton Big Band classic “It’s Oh So Quiet”. www.lucywoodward.com

LUCY WOODWARD releases Stories From The Dust. It is perhaps her most personal album yet, as crafted with GRAMMY Award-winning co-producer and co-writer of most of the songs on the album David Garza (Fiona Apple, Gaby Moreno). David and Lucy spent several weeks in downtown LA writing these stories about women, the ones she grew up with—the fiercely independent and unconventional women who raised her—and those she merely observed from afar, whether in the sandbox or on the subway. Stories From The Dust features bass extraordinaire Tim Lefebvre, Amy Wood on drums and co-writer Larry Goldings. Inspired by Bill Withers and Nina Simone, she added inspiration from the deep rivers of Americana, blues, flamenco singing and the sounds of the female voices from Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66. Stories From The Dust is rootsy and melodic, continuing a decades-long streak of craft oriented, critically acclaimed full length albums from the New York native. In July 2024, Lucy releases her first live album Lucy Woodward & The Rocketeers on GroundUP Music. The album features her bespoke 18-person jazz collective inspired by American composers such as Nina Simone and Billy Strayhorn, with dynamic arrangements explicitly written to match Lucy’s passionate vocal manner, color, and timbre; the songs range from high-energy explosions to hauntingly intimate meditations.
