Dexter Jordan Biography

The son of a minister of music and baptist choir alto, Dexter Jordan has spent his entire life
exploring and expressing himself through music. The sweeping warm reception of his first solo,
“Silent Night” at 9 years old for the 5000+ member congregation of Mt. Zion Baptist Church
(NC) opened Dexter’s eyes to the possibility of more for his gift. As Dexter grew into his voice,
he encountered more and more opportunities to share him blossoming talent; at 14, Dexter won
first place at Amateur Night at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem, NY. In 2012, Dexter
performed at Carnegie Hall with his high school choir and received runner up for a solo
performance. Three years later, Dexter released his first single, “Hennessy” which gained
widespread acclaim when Dreamville Records artist, Ari Lennox, discovered the song and shared
it with her fans.
In 2016, Dexter’s beloved mother and first teacher of unconditional love, passed away from
breast cancer, propelling Dexter into a hiatus in every area of his life. In early 2018, only a few
months after Dexter began planning to record more music, Dexter received the news of the
passing of his brother-friend, KJ. This moment punctuated the urgency of capturing and
memorializing the moment of grieving and healing that had become inescapable for him. As he
worked to record his first album, his “Hello, New Me” was discovered and shared by
Grammy-Award winning vocalist, Yebba.
Dexter has since performed at DC and Charlotte Pride Festivals, been interviewed on Charlotte’s
NPR station, WFAE, and has released his debut album, Blue, in which he delicately unravels
layers of grief, growth, coping and resilience through masterful musicianship. Dexter hopes that
his deep commitment to being his unapologetically black queer self in his music and life inspires
others across the globe to do the same!
