Singer-songwriter Marika Hackman performed a delightful 90 minutes of songs drawn from a decade of recordings, showcasing many numbers off her most recent album ‘Big Sigh’ which was launched earlier this year, her first new album for over three years. Marika played with a three piece band (drums, bass, guitar/ keyboard) that brought her unusual songs to life. The sell-out Strange Brew audience greeted each song with warmth and appreciation and hung on her every word. The evening opened with a nice set from Gia Ford and her band. Strange Brew is a good venue with a decent bar. Look forward to being back there soon.

Do good

It’s been rewarding following the musical development of Marika Hackman across five studio albums spanning the past nine years, and her fifth album ‘Big Sigh’ is probably her best yet. Her album launch event at Rough Trade, Bristol, showcased several of the new songs, with a few favourites from earlier albums, and confirmed the strength of her songwriting, singing and playing on the latest material. These launch events are nicely relaxed, and the fact that Marika was having a few difficulties with the tuning of her guitar and remembering the words of one song simply added to the informality of the evening. The live set lasted just 40 minutes, after which Marika moved to the front desk to sign albums for the audience. I would have loved to hear more from the new album but with a sold-out venue of 200 waiting to meet Marika, and a full UK tour heading our way this Spring, I can see why we only got a taster of the new album. But the evening left me looking forward to seeing Marika when she returns to Bristol in March to play at Strange Brew.

Marika is a fantastic artist. Always a great performance.

She’s a precious gem the show was amazing. The energy she and her band put into the performance is incredible. It was an experience.

Simply awesome. Marika and her band were killing it onstage, and their enthusiasm was infectious. Her self-assured stage presence when performing was endearingly juxtaposed with her humility when she'd speak to the crowd. Her songs moved from head-banger to bittersweet lullabies with ease. Her band were super - her drummer in particular. An utterly authentic, excellent gig in an intimate venue. I'm already looking forward to the next one.

Cool and engaging, Marika puts on a solid show. Her band was excellent and the live show sound just like the record.

Only wish it could have started earlier! I blame this on the venue as Marika played earlier times in other parts of her tour. I had to catch the commuter rail home and had to leave early to do so :(

Some technical problems with the sound system, otherwise absolutely amazing.

How was the concert? I can't stop thinking about it and about her. She's the most talented artist out there. Hardly recommend
