Cimafunk was outstanding. The energy and groove were great. They were so good I thought they might have blown Lettuce off the stage a little. Note - this was my first time seeing Lettuce. I’ve listened to them, but never live. Holy Guacamole! They promised they had something for us and they did. Incredible. Their music is great. Add in the light show and visuals and it’s twice as great. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!!!

Once again, Lettuce hit a "grand slam" with the concert at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh on Sunday, 10/29/23. I mean they "BROUGHT IT!" The venue was PACKED and the band delivered a super-tight performance that left everyone there wanting more. The two set show lasted a little over two hours. Adam and Jesus were totally in the pocket with a driving force that only they know how to deliver, giving the foundation to the FUNK! "Shmeeans" ventured happily between rhythmic strumming and virtuoso solos that further amped up the energy. Ryan and "Benny" were simply fabulous! You could see just how much fun they were having throughout the show. Both are using tech that gives their acoustic instruments an ethereal texture that defies explanation, but when they played them unaltered, the raw notes pierced the soundscape to give every song that special "edge" that defines the band. Nigel played and sang his ass off, bouncing between keyboards with a fluidity that very few can do! 30+ years of playing together, and it shows. Rarely have I seen a band this TIGHT and this show was no exception. Lastly, the sound at the Lincoln Theatre is arguably the best indoor sound I have heard, and that is mostly on the guy at the soundboard. Sure, it was loud...REALLY LOUD, but you could hear EVERY note played, and easily discern individual voices and instruments, while simultaneously enjoying the collective onslaught of their vibe. If you have never seen Lettuce live, you need to! They are easily one of the BEST groups out there, regardless of genre, but none are more FUNKY!

I was pleasantly surprised to see there was no queue for the will call tickets. Parking was such a breeze too! The venue itself was great - there’s a raised dias in the back that allows short folks like me to stand on to see the stage. Now as for the band itself, I was so happy they took the stage at around 8:45pm. They were ELECTRIC. I loved their music and synergy. And the drummer? Oh my god. Ladies, be on your most effective birth control because that man, on his kit, is f***ing POTENT. He can get your ovaries going if you know what I mean - and I’m menopausal! I love, love, love Lettuce and the Observatory was the best place to see them at!

About Lettuce

LETTUCE is (a) the prime ingredient in a salad, (b) a slang for cash, (c) a green herb that can be smoked, (d) a genre-busting six-member musical collective formed in 1992 by four alumni of the prestigious Berklee College Of Music, or (e) all of the above. If you answered “e,” then you’re in on the sheer magic of a band that both feeds the rich history of funk music and combines it with strains of hip-hop, rock, psychedelia, jazz, soul, jam, go-go, and the avant-garde.

The GRAMMY® Award-nominated six-piece is comprised of Adam Deitch [drums, percussion], Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff [guitar], Erick “Jesus” Coomes [bass], Ryan Zoidis [alto, baritone, tenor sax, Korg X-911], Eric “Benny” Bloom [trumpet, horns], and Nigel Hall [vocals, Hammond B-3, Rhodes, clavinet, keyboards]. To date, their discography includes Outta Here [2002], Rage! [2008], Fly [2012], Crush [2015], the EP Mt. Crushmore [2016], the live album Witches Stew [2017], Elevate [2019], Resonate [2020], Unify [2022], and now VIBE – a single 48 minute continuous session of pure, free-flowing improvisation, available digitally for the first time.

With VIBE, Lettuce cement their status as boundary-pushing innovators over three decades into their lauded career, blurring lines and smashing up jazz chords, psychedelic passages, big horns, strains of soul and go-go, hip-hop elements for an uplifting, improvisational sound all their own. Ryan Zoidis explains, “we got into a vibe and hit record. 48 minutes went by like a blink of an eye. This is our first purely improvised recording. Nothing planned, nothing edited or overdubbed. This is a true spontaneous musical expression captured in its entirety.”

All together now… Lett us VIBE.
