About Stahlwerk
The three young musicians of Stahlwerk forged a very personal form of jazz in their steel mill, drawing influence from all sorts of styles, from minimal and classical music to pop and rock. Performing without a setlist and without safety net, they combine free improvisation with spontaneous interpretation of their own structured compositions, which sound new every evening.
The compositions, which serve the band as raw material for their live creations, are by pianist Dominic Stahl from Basel, who found kindred spirits in Bernese drummer Tobias Schmid and bassist Francesco Rezzonico from Ticino. "Grund", the band's first studio album, was released in 2016, after years of break-in in European clubs and concert halls. The group's latest work ("Stahlwerk", Hout Records 2020) aims to capture on record the trio's original way of playing live, in an interconnected series of improvised landscapes and reinvented compositions.
