About September

There is more than one artist with this name: (1) a Swedish pop singer, (2) a mid-'90s California emo band, (3) a Dutch rock band, (4) a progressive jazz band from Yugoslavia, (5) mid 80s pop-synth group.

(1) September, a pseudonym for Petra Marklund, is a pop and dance singer who has reached the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay Top 10 two times, with her internationally acclaimed 2005 single "Satellites" and 2006 single "Cry for You". Her songs are written and produced by Jonas von der Burg, Niclas von der Burg and Anoo Bhagavan. Petra started her career at the age of 12, recording various songs in studios. By the time she was 17, she had already snagged a record deal and was singing in a rock band. Performing a brand of catchy dance-pop, Petra soon had hits like "La la la (Never give it up)", "We can do it" and "September all over", which were written and produced by the trio Jonas von der Burg, Niclas von der Burg and Anoo Bhagavan. Petra's stage name was influenced by the fact that the daughter of producer Jonas is named Juni, Swedish for June, and that she was born in September. Petra has lately earned a reputation as an acoustic performer playing original versions of her dance tracks on Swedish national radio and TV shows.

(2) There has also been a short-lived American emo band called September. Forming in San Jose, California, in September 1994 and ending May 1995, they played a total of two real shows and recorded five songs. Four of them can be found on their self-titled (erasima pucella) 10" (Tree Records) and the fifth is on a compilation CD from England's Simba records entitled "Love is a Dog From Hell". Someday a CD of all their material may be released but as for now, September is just a black hole in "emo" history.

(3) The Dutch September rock band was founded in early 2006 in Groningen, Netherland. You can download the single of the Dutch band September for free at Last.fm.

(4) Progressive Jazz band from Yugoslavia. SEPTEMBER was formed in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1975 by two veteran mambers of the super-group called JUGOSLOVENSKA POP SELEKCIJA, organist Tihomir Pop Asanovic and vocalist/guitar player Janez Boncina. They gathered excellent instrumentalists of the then Yugoslavian jazz and rock scene, Petar Ugrin-trumpet/violin, Ratko Divjak-drums, Karel Charlie Novak-bass and Braco Doblekar-saxophone/percussion, for the first album "Zadnja avantura". In the late 1977 the line-up changed when Ugrin, Novak and Divjak left to be replaced by Marjan Malikovic-guitar, Jadran Ogrin-bass and Nelfi Depanger-drums, who took part in the recording of the second album during their American visit in early 1978. In this period they enjoyed certain popularity due to a radio-friendly hit-singl with the title track of the second album "Domovina moja" (Eng. "My Homeland"). They broke-up in late 1979 and the final members, along with Asanovic, Boncina and Doblekar, included Ante Mazuran-guitar, Dani Ganchev-bass and Tone Dimnik-drums. Both Asanovic and Boncina led parallel solo careers.

The style of SEPTEMBER can be desribed as a mellow form of jazz-rock with accessible and relatively short songs, characterized by distinguished vocals of Boncina and excellent instrumental skills of the band. The first album is recommended to fusion fans, while the second was influenced by American AOR sound of the mid-1970s and is more mainstream oriented.
