About Jens Lehman and the Time Cops

JENS LEHMAN & THE TIME COPS

“Of all the songwriters I’ve worked with in the past few years, Jens is truly among the most interesting...I don’t typically hear artists who write in the vein of Dilla and Van Morrison, but it starts making sense when you listen to his stuff.”

-Hear Nebraska

Jens Lehman & The Time Cops are a Rock and Soul band from Lincoln, Nebraska. Formed in 2016, The Time Cops combine the relatable themes of heartland rock with flourishes of jazz, deceptively hard rock, and if you squint hard enough, hip-hop. The character of the band is defined by an approachable on-stage persona belying the musical complexity of the band’s compositions.

In a world of swearing off the music of the past in favor of pop stars singing over pitch perfect but emotionally stale electronics, Jens Lehman & The Time Cops are a beacon of stripped-down guitar and piano melodies and roaring horn breaks They sound like a singing Gibson with swinging horns. They sound like a hard beat with a groovy bass line. They bring the bright chords of an electric piano. The same chords that bounced off apartment walls a thousand times. They sound like Spring-time in full-stride, teenage misadventures, and redemption under a perfect sky.

Picture The E Street Band trying to play a bunch of Prince songs, and getting really close to pulling it off.

The Time Cops play original songs from Jens Lehman’s May 2016 release All That We Could Do, recorded before and during the formation of The Time Cops. What started as simply a vehicle for Lehman’s songs to be performed live has become a living musical entity of its own.

The band’s release of the video single Perfect Sky in October 2016, found the band adding a more energetic, rocking, electric sound to their cornerstone Soul and R&B grooves. The band is currently focused on their forthcoming as-yet-untitled Jens Lehman & The Time Cops EP. The EP will be available on all streaming services as well as in physical form in August 2018.

Time Cops have been spotted performing at the first annual Nebraska Funk and Soul Alliance benefit in December 2016 and Lincoln Exposed in February 2017. They have also opened for national touring artists Appleseed Collective. Lehman has performed and recorded extensively with Nebraska music veteran Lucas Kellison, opening for Here Come The Mummies as a member of The Undisco Kids which featured Kellison and CJ Mills.
